What are Dental Bridges ?

Dental bridges can restore a smile compromised by missing or damaged teeth and gaps. Bridges work to replace several missing teeth, restoring function to your mouth for improved comfort and ease chewing, speaking, and smiling. Bridges can be made to look highly natural, also serving to improve the appearance of your smile.

Dental Bridges

Bridges are natural-looking dental appliances that can replace a section of missing teeth. Because they are custom-made, bridges are barely noticeable and can restore the natural contour of teeth as well as the proper bite relationship between upper and lower teeth.

Bridges are sometimes referred to as fixed partial dentures because they are semi-permanent and are bonded to existing teeth or implants. There are several types of fixed dental bridges (cannot be removed), including conventional fixed bridges, cantilever bridges and resin-bonded bridges.

A conventional fixed partial denture is the most common type of dental bridge. This type of dental bridge is supported by abutments on either side of the appliance.

When only one side of the gap can be used to support the appliance, a cantilever bridge is used to fill the space. Because of its reliance on a single side for support, a cantilever bridge requires strong abutment teeth.

A resin-bonded bridge, also known as a Maryland bridge, can be used to fill gaps left by missing teeth with minimal alteration to an existing tooth. This bridge may replace a single tooth or up to three teeth and is usually used for anterior cases.

Unlike a removable bridge, which you can take out and clean, only your dentist can remove a fixed bridge.  .

Porcelain, gold alloys or combinations of materials are usually used to make bridge appliances.

Appliances called implant bridges are attached to an area below the gum tissue, or the bone.
